Obscure Bodybuilding Exercise Explained - The Zercher Lift

By: Dane Fletcher

No matter how hard you tried, it would be extremely difficult to find a strengthening set that could back up the claims of the benefits of the zercher lift style. Irrefutably, this is the toughest means of core training that should be a part of any serious lifters workout.

The Zercher lift involves weight and the bar being held in front of your body in the bend of your arms. When the weight is where you need it to be, you will perform the basic movement completely taking the basic exercise to an instant power movement.

You can experiment with the Zercher by challenging particular muscle groups that you might not be aggressively engaging enough.

There are also several different things you can use in lieu of the bar and weights. You can use: Sandbags, barbells, axles, EZ curl bars, rocks , logs or if you have a partner, you can use his body weight.

Some of the best movements to try are: lunges, step-ups, squats, dead lifts, walks and torso rotation.

The Zercher will require you to aggressively brace and keep a static upright torso position while the rest of your body will execute movement. This will immediately teach you how to transfer force and maintain your breathing while under a great amount of tension.

One of the hardest things for a power lifter to keep in mind is not to overdo it. Even if you have the muscle mass to handle this type of challenge in your routine, you can still overdo it. Keeping the torso in the upright position has to be the most significant portion of this lift. If you bend over at any time, the weight can bare a lot of damage in places you forgot even existed.

Additionally, you might not want to try the Zercher unless you have a spotter just in case things can go awry. With a spotter, you still might overdo it, but are less likely to suffer any long term damage with the extra hands.

You will want to continue each set to fatigue and then change the set or muscle group.

You will find that this has to be one of the most result producing lifts than any other. For the beginner of the Zercher, you will also want to start out small and keeping the sets small working your way up every day.
